Hi,
I have the following printer installed on vista. It doesnt work though. I send somthing to print, and the light flashes on the printer, but nothing prints. Vista tells me its printed but it clearly hasnt.

Any ideas on what i can do????

HP Deskjet 5650
Contact HP via your preferred method and ask them about supporting the product they manufactured and sold to you?

Don't install the HP drivers from the disk or the XP ones. Uninstall them from add/remove prog if there and unistall all the entries from device manager. Go to control panel / printers and add printer. Don't use search, choose add from list. Choose Hp and select the closet deskjet series to your printer. When it asks for what type of connection, use "usb virtual port". Once the printer says installed, try a test print. If it works, go back to device manager, and under unkown devices if it shows your actual printer model... disable the driver to avoid it searching for new hardware on every bootup.

The printer port is asked for before showing the list of printers and "usb virtual port" is not listed as a possiblility. I went further in the process and there is no other option in the install printer to change the port.

There should be something in the port list saying "usb0xxx - virtual printer port for USB". Another thing to try then is go go into device manager and change or add if not there, IEE1284 Compatible Printer (set as a iee1284 compatible printer) and IEE1284 Devices (set as USB Printer support). Dev manager should refresh and the 2 IEE1284 entries vanish. In the USB section of dev manager a new entry "USB Printer Support" should now be there. Then try adding the printer and see if you can get teh "usb00xx - virtual printer port for USB" in the list.

That is Rather Weird.
I have the HP DeskJet 940C connected via USB, and it has never-failingly worked in Vista (in fact, it has routinely auto-detected the printer without my having to do anything). The only thing I have had to do is set it as my default printer. It even gets the model number right (apparently, Vista's HP Universal Printer Driver *does* differentiate between certain models of HP printers). In that aspect, Vista's HP Universal Driver is just like that of Windows XP (Plug and Print). But then, the *same* DeskJet is also supported in Linux (and even Solaris) via CUPS. I'm using the USB cable included with the printer and do *not* have it connected to a hub (it's connected directly to the computer).
